Definition of art epoch
Today, we categorise art history in different art epochs. The style of art and the motives vary from period to period. There were eras in which landscape paintings were popular, and there were epochs of art in which the styles of the paintings were dominated by realistic, almost photographic portrait art.
When talking today of art history or famous art, we do not only include the epochs in which abstract art originated, but also the epochs which were dominated by sculptures, statues and figurines, for example Roman, old Italian or Greek art.
When talking of an art epoch definition, we include approximate dates to distinguish; and we give examples of the most frequently known art objects and artists. European art history starts with pre-historic paintings in the Grotte Chauvet in France which are said to be about 32,000 years old. Classical period art are, for example, oil paintings from Renaissance artists such as Sandro Botticelli, Leonardo Da Vinci or Michelangelo Buonarroti. Baroque and Rococo were dominated by painters such as Caravaggio, Rembrandt or Rubens. Art of the epoch known as “la belle epoch” are European paintings and objects from the end 19th and the beginning of 20th century. Contemporary modern art is referred to when we talk of painters such as Picasso, Kandinsky or Dali.
