A music box is an interesting collectible

Today a regular music box or a Christmas music box have a romantic flair – reminding us of good old times with classical music or of our childhood in which we often had musical boxes at Christmas with carols such as Silent Night or Jingle Bells.

The antique music box has its origins in the 18th and 19th centuries. Music boxes were automatic music instruments delivering sounds from cylinders and later on from interchangeable metal disks. Still in that time, the musicbox has undergone changes in design and decoration – also due to mass production in the industrialised 19th century.

Music box parts for decoration often include small drums and bells, dancing figurines as well as rich inlays such as rosewood inserts with floral motives or velvet interiors. High gloss finish rounds off good quality music boxes. The music box production industry still faces very high production costs. Especially top quality craftsmanship, exotic and luxury wood increased production costs for any music box company. In former times, music boxes were valuable toys, gifts and entertainment devices. Today, music boxes are often found in stores for collectibles and antiques and cater to the international collectors’ market. The worth of a music box collection depends very much on the age and style of the musical devices.
